How To Use CBD Oil: The Ultimate Guide

CBD is everywhere these days. You’ll find it in cocktails, lotions, coffees, essential oils, and even bottled water. It’s ubiquitous enough that you may have a vague idea of what it is, but might not be able to explain it in full or know how to use CBD oil. So let’s learn together!

What is CBD?

CBD comes from two sources: hemp plants and marijuana plants.

We’ll start with marijuana. There are two main outputs from a marijuana plant. The first is THC. This is the one you are probably familiar with. Despite its own medical benefits, like relieving nausea and helping to treat appetite loss and insomnia, you probably know THC better as the green sticky icky that turns Phish jam concerts into religious experiences.

The second main output of a marijuana plant is cannabidiol, or CBD. Like THC, CBD oil also delivers a host of medical benefits, but it does so without any of the psychoactive side effects. In short, no, it won’t get you high. And you will like Phish jam concerts just about the same as you do now.

Even though marijuana plants produce CBD, most CBD oil used in products on the market are derived from hemp plants. The biggest difference between hemp plants and marijuana plants is that hemp plants are almost entirely devoid of THC.

The benefits of CBD

CBD has a still-expanding list of conditions it can help with. Its first success story was helping to ease the symptoms of Dravet’s Syndrome, a rare pediatric form of epilepsy. Now it is most commonly used to help relieve chronic pain, quell inflammation, and reduce anxiety. Emerging research is also pointing to signs that CBD can help with promoting better sleep.

How does CBD work?

CBD interacts with our own internal endocannabinoid system. That system is made of three parts. There are endocannabinoids, which are cannabis-like substances in our bodies. Then there are the receptors throughout the body that endocannabinoids and cannabinoids bond to. Finally, there are enzymes that break down both the endocannabinoids and cannabinoids.

This system regulates everything from appetite and mood to inflammation and sleep. The interaction between endocannabinoids, cannabinoids, and receptors throughout your body is what creates the feel-good effects CBD can deliver.
