Here at The Grommet, we love the Makers and products we work with—they‘re a part of us, they make up who we are. Each Grommet has a purpose and each Maker has a story to tell, and it is our mission to share these with the world.

Our journey has shown us over and over again that when we as consumers support companies who do good, good things happen. Simple as that. A perfect example of this is the collaboration between two do-good Grommets—Haiti Projects and Luci by MPOWERED.
Haiti Projects is a nonprofit organization whose main mission is to empower women of rural Haiti toward self-sufficiency. By supporting local medical clinics, building libraries to foster literacy, and providing micro-loans to farmers, they have had a meaningful impact on the people of Haiti.
What caught the eye of the Grommet, however, were the beautiful hand-embroidered nightgowns created by Haiti Projects unique sewing cooperative. By supporting this initiative, Haiti Projects is able to enable women of Haiti to use their amazing and unique embroidery skills to earn a fair income. This income is used for food and school fees for their children. It’s a truly special project—one that we knew we wanted to be a part of.

The Luci is another one of our do-good Grommets. It’s an inflatable, affordable, solar lantern that generates continuous light with zero emissions anywhere on earth, independent of the grid. Through their buy one/give one Give Program, Luci has sent their lanterns to more than 100 countries around the world, helping millions of people.
The founders of MPOWERED developed the Luci lantern in 2010 after an earthquake in Haiti left thousands without power. Without light, children can’t study, entrepreneurs have to stop working, women are less safe walking outside, health clinics have to close and, well, are you starting to see the connection?
MPOWERED sure did. And that’s why they have selected Haiti Projects to be the latest recipient of their Give program. Thanks to MPOWERED’s donation, Haiti Projects has received a total of 516 Luci lanterns that arrived in Haiti just a couple of weeks ago.

With the help of these lanterns, Haiti Projects is able to give their employees the light to do work from home at night, and their kids the light to complete homework at home. Additionally, a bunch of the Luci lights will also be donated to Haiti Project’s brand new Maker library. The lanterns will be available for community members to check out along with the books that they may be borrowing.
This beautiful collaboration makes us extremely happy, and it serves as a wonderful reminder as to why we do what we do. It shows the power of teamwork and the amazing things that happen when consumers and Makers support each other. Together, we can bring light to the world.
