In our Meet the Maker series we get to know entrepreneurs who have pursued their dreams and launched a small business. To celebrate Women’s History Month, we’re shining a light on women Makers to hear what lessons they have learned along the way.
We caught up with Jane Lee of Poke-a-Dot, an adjustable cosmetics organizer. Jane created the travel makeup organizer after getting fed up with digging around in her makeup bag. A frequent traveler, she’d had it with fishing through a jumble of cosmetics.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be either Barbra Streisand or Linda Ronstadt. I LOVED to sing. I was an opera major at Indiana University and was part of several musicals. I do remember wanting to open a hotel when I was young (like 9) because I loved to organize the names of the people who were my guests. I guess that is where my organizational journey began.
What advice would you give yourself 10 years ago?
Don’t sweat the small stuff. Believe in yourself and your God-given talents.
What’s one piece of advice you’d share with other makers?
Believe, believe, believe. If you have faith in what you are doing, have done your due diligence, and it has proven that what you are “making” can be successful, don’t listen to the naysayers.
What has surprised you most about starting a business?
How incredibly satisfying it is.
What is the biggest challenge?
Being creative with a limited amount of money.
What has been the most rewarding part of starting a business?
Seeing the a-ha moment when I present this product to potential customers. They see the vision and get excited about organizing their lives with this product. I remember bringing a prototype to a high-end cosmetic store chain in Nashville and they committed to me based on this prototype. They shared the vision.
How has The Grommet community helped your business since your feature?
Amazing community! I feel the support of the Grommet Team wanting to insure that I can be as successful as possible. They reach out to me to help me expand my knowledge on how to utilize the site to make my product as successful as possible. I have to honestly say that when I created the organizer, The Grommet was my first choice on launch day!
